Robert Cronbach was an American sculptor. He born in St. Louis in 1908 and lived most of his adult life in New York. He was a founding member of the Sculpture Guild and worked with the Works Progress Administration on large scale public art in Buffalo, NY, in the 1930s.  His commissions included sculptures and fountains at the United Nations General Assembly Building and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Federal Office Building in St. Louis.

Robert had his first solo show at the Hudson Walker Gallery in New York in 1940 and exhibited for many years with the Bertha Shaefer Gallery. He taught at Adelphi College in Garden City, N.Y., from 1947 to 1961 and was also an instructor at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, serving as chairman of the school's board of governors from 1975 to 1982.

In later life, his focus changed from the abstract bronze of his fountains to intimately scaled ceramic pieces, often depicting figures in architectural spaces.

He and his wife, Maxine Silver Cronbach, spent nearly half their time in southern France in the last years of her life where he built a ceramics studio.

The pieces at this sale here were given to Bob’s son, Michael, including his favorite piece “Clouds” and sculpture of Maxine in her sick bed that he repeated in different media.
